Where History Meets Hospitality

About BHPS

Over the past two and a half decades, the Society’s efforts have led to a host of achievements such as the creation of the Bluffton National Register Historic District and a passage of a historic preservation ordinance protecting the historic resources, character, and sense of place of Old Town Bluffton.  The Society also places historical markers on important buildings throughout the District and presents the annual Caldwell Award for excellence in individual preservation efforts in Bluffton.  The Society will continue to serve the community by educating town residents and visitors about the historical and architectural legacy of Bluffton and working toward the preservation of its historic built environment.

In 1998, the Bluffton Historical Preservation Society, Inc. purchased the Heyward House site in an effort to create a focal point for the movement to preserve Bluffton’s remaining architectural heritage and assist the Town by creating a sustainable heritage tourism industry.  Now you can take a walk back into the past by visiting the Heyward House Historic Center where you can learn more about the life and material culture of this historic tidewater community.

The Bluffton Historical Preservation Society houses and  maintains the “Caldwell Historic Archives”, a collection of interesting and valuable historical resources that pertain to Bluffton and Beaufort County.  The Caldwell Archives  is available by appointment only. For more information please call (843) 757-6293 or email info@heywardhouse.org.
